Sarasota Isn’t Just for Retirees: Who’s Moving Here Now?

Sarasota Isn’t Just for Retirees: Who’s Moving Here Now?

For years, Sarasota has been known as a popular retirement destination.

But that’s only part of the story.

New migration data shows that people are moving to Florida at many different stages of life, and the Sarasota-Bradenton area is standing out nationally.

According to U-Haul migration data reported by Florida Realtors®, the North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton area ranked #3 in the nation for Gen X movers and #5 for Millennials.

Florida itself ranked #1 for both Gen X and Millennial net migration and was the only state to rank in the top 10 across Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z.

So, who is moving to Sarasota now?

Increasingly, it includes people who are still working, relocating with significant home equity, buying second homes and choosing where they want to spend the next stage of life before traditional retirement age.

More People Are Making the Florida Move Before Retirement

One of the most interesting parts of the migration story is what's happening among people in their 50s and early 60s.

Florida Realtors economists found that households ages 55 to 64 generated Florida's largest net household income inflow in 2023-2024, at $7.6 billion.

Many people in this age group are still working and may have accumulated substantial equity in homes they've owned elsewhere.

Instead of waiting until retirement to move to Florida, some are making the move earlier.

Others may purchase a second home first, spend more time here each year and eventually make Florida their primary residence.

For Sarasota, that's an important shift.

Why Sarasota and Manatee County?

There isn't one answer because there isn't one Sarasota lifestyle.

Someone relocating here can choose a downtown condominium and be close to restaurants, arts and events.

Another buyer may want an established Sarasota neighborhood with easier access to the beaches and boating.

Someone else may prefer Lakewood Ranch, with newer construction, master-planned communities, trails, golf, amenities and town centers.

Then there are buyers drawn to places such as Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Palmer Ranch, Bradenton and other communities throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties.

That's one of the area's strengths.

You aren't choosing just a house. You have several very different versions of Gulf Coast living within the same general region.

Sarasota for Buyers Who Are Still Working

Relocating before retirement changes the home search.

If you're still working, your priorities may include a home office, airport access, reliable connectivity and proximity to the places you need to be during an ordinary workweek.

You may also be thinking differently about the home itself.

Do you want something that's easy to leave when you travel?

Would new construction reduce the amount of maintenance you want to take on?

Do you want enough space for visiting family?

Would you prefer to be closer to Downtown Sarasota, or does a master-planned community fit your day-to-day life better?

The right location for a full-time working resident may be very different from the location someone chooses primarily for vacations.

Second Home Now, Primary Home Later?

Another path I see buyers consider is purchasing a Sarasota second home before they're ready to relocate permanently.

That can provide an opportunity to spend more time here and learn what everyday life actually feels like before making a full-time move.

If that's your plan, think beyond how the home works for a two-week vacation.

Could you comfortably live there for several months?

What happens if it eventually becomes your primary residence?

Is there enough storage?

How much maintenance will it require while you're away?

Are the location and community convenient for everyday life?

Sometimes the right second home is one that gives you flexibility for the future.

What About Lakewood Ranch?

Lakewood Ranch deserves particular attention from relocation buyers because it offers a very different lifestyle from coastal Sarasota.

For someone who wants newer construction, trails, parks, golf, community amenities and a master-planned environment, it can be an excellent place to explore.

Sarasota may have the advantage for buyers who place greater importance on proximity to the Gulf, boating, established neighborhoods, Downtown Sarasota, arts and culture or the barrier islands.

Neither is automatically better.

The decision should come down to what you want your life here to look like.

Moving to Sarasota Is About More Than the House

One of the biggest mistakes relocation buyers can make is beginning with listings before understanding the area.

A house can be beautiful and still be in the wrong location for you.

Before narrowing down homes, I'd think about questions like:

How often do I want to go to the beach?

Is boating important to me?

Do I want new construction or an established neighborhood?

Do I want golf or club amenities?

Will I still be working?

How much maintenance do I want?

Do I want to be able to walk to restaurants and entertainment?

Will family be visiting frequently or potentially moving nearby too?

Those answers can quickly change which Sarasota or Manatee County communities make sense.

Is Sarasota Still a Retirement Destination?

Absolutely. Sarasota continues to appeal to people who are retired or approaching retirement.

What's changing is the idea that retirement is the only reason people move here.

The latest migration numbers show strong movement among Gen X and Millennials as well.

For me, that's the more interesting Sarasota story.

People are increasingly looking at where and how they want to live before retirement arrives.

And when you're making that kind of move, finding the right community becomes just as important as finding the right house.

Thinking About Moving to Sarasota?

If Sarasota or Manatee County is on your relocation list, start with the lifestyle rather than the listings.

Think about where you'll work, where you'll spend your weekends, how often you'll use the beach, whether you want newer construction, how much maintenance you want and what you want an ordinary week in Florida to feel like.

Then we can narrow down the communities that actually fit.
