Sarasota County commissioners have approved a 12 month moratorium on hyperscale data center applications, putting new proposals on hold while county leaders take a closer look at how these massive facilities could impact the community.
The unanimous 5 to 0 vote followed an inquiry from XF Group about developing a hyperscale data center along Cattlemen Road. These large scale facilities can require significant amounts of electricity and water to operate, raising concerns about how a project of this size could affect local resources and infrastructure.
Commissioners cited concerns surrounding water use and potential contamination, increased demand on the electric grid, noise pollution, and the overall impact on nearby communities. Some commissioners have already expressed interest in taking the issue a step further by considering a permanent ban on hyperscale data centers in Sarasota County.
For Sarasota homeowners and residents, the discussion is about more than one potential development. Large scale projects can have lasting effects on infrastructure, utilities, surrounding properties, natural resources, and quality of life. The moratorium gives county leaders time to evaluate those potential impacts before deciding how hyperscale data centers should be handled moving forward.
As Sarasota County continues to grow, decisions about development and land use will play an important role in shaping the future of our community. This 12 month pause gives local leaders an opportunity to determine whether hyperscale data centers have a place in that future.
