If you love the charm and character that makes downtown Sarasota special, this is one to pay attention to. A Tennessee-based developer has proposed a 324-unit apartment complex at 1899 Fruitville Road that would demolish 22 parcels of historic 1920s and 1930s bungalows — and displace 17 beloved local businesses that serve more than 20,000 customers every month. Thirteen of those businesses are women-owned, and none of them have a place in the new plan, the developer has zero retail space included. The project would bring a four-to-five-story building and a six-level parking garage to the Gillespie Park neighborhood, dramatically changing the feel of the area. A petition is now calling on the Sarasota City Commission to step in before final approvals are granted. Whether you’re a longtime local or recently planted roots here, this is a conversation worth joining. Read the full petition and add your voice by Clicking Here.
